Look what I have brought for my sock making projects.

These are sock blockers!

Once I have completed crocheting a pair of socks to make them look like a professional-looking piece of perfection, (LOL) I will block them into shape. Blocking can be done with water, steam or heat from an iron. I like to block using lukewarm water and air drying. I have read many opinions on blocking acrylic yarn. Some state there is no need but I agree with those that state it gives your project a nicer finished look. Never use heat from an iron on acrylic yarn because it will go very limp or worse melt! Spring 2012 Vogue Patterns

The new 2012 Spring Vogue Patterns are out. Yeah! These are the ones I am considering buying.

Tom and Linda Platt, Vogue 1283. I love the spiral gathers on the front of this dress. The Platts focus on elegant simplicity.

Today's Fit by Sandra Betzina, Vogue 1292. Just look at the cute ruffles on the hemline of this skirt! You guys know I love skirts. This will be mine. (LOL)

This is just a dream outfit. It is an "Advanced" Vogue Pattern so I will not make.(LOL) But I sure do love it! Bellvillle Sassoon, Vogue 1296.

I Am Volunteering!

I have been approved to serve as an volunteer for the Hardin Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Elizabethtown, Kentucky! I am very excited about the opportunity to learn about my new community through public service.

From the Auxiliary website and Director, Kevin, I ave learned there are more than 150 active members of the Auxiliary who volunteer throughout the hospital. These men and women give approximately 40,000 hours each year and raise thousands of dollars, which they return to the hospital through major gifts. Volunteers work in many capacities. Some of these include performing clerical duties, serving as hosts and hostesses in the surgery, ICU and CCU waiting rooms, delivering flowers and mail working the front desk, and escorting patients to various departments. They also are busy behind the scenes helping out with statistics, education, and working the Gift Shop. The Gift Shop has the best collection of Vera Bradley items I have ever seen! (LOL)

Crocheting Socks

What have I been doing craftwise? Have I been crocheting socks! There are toe-up socks, cuff down socks, tube socks. The yarn used to crochet socks is quite fine. So I have to make myself take eye-rest breaks, or my vision starts to blur. I didn't even have to go shopping to buy sock yarns. I already had a small tote bag full of sock yarn! (LOL)

Sock crocheting is a fun process for me. However, I get so excited when I finish one sock and then I remember, I have to do another. I have two feet! I will post the socks as I finish each pair.

Yellow Chiffon Sequined Top - McCall's 5855

Project Details
I was visiting family members in Birmingham, Alabama and decided to visit the local Hancock Fabrics Store. My eyes fell upon this interesting piece of chiffon sequined fabric! I brought the fabric with no real idea how I would use it. Today the fabric became a top.

Pattern - McCall’s 5855, View A
Fabric - 1 7/8 yards yellow chiffon with flowered sequined print - (Hancock Fabrics)
Notions - 2 yards1 inch white, twill tape, 3 yards nylon wine ribbon

This is a very loose fitting, below hip length top with drawstring and neckline facing. I often stay away from any pattern that is very loose fitting because it usually just swallows me up. However, I decide to take a chance with this project. I had to shorten the length of the top by three inches. I also adjusted the width of the the front and back pieces. I replaced the neckline fabric facing with a neckline binding facing. Okay, let me state that sewing a fabric that is chiffon with sequins is something I will probably not attempt to do again any time soon. This was suppose to be an “One Hour Top” well it took me much longer than that. (LOL)

Conclusion
After all this sewing, I am really not sure if this top is a style for me! I think it looks better on the hanger then me, oh well! (LOL)

Apron Print Waist Apron

Project Details
I do not quilt. However, I like to view quilts and visit fabric stores that service the needs of quilters. I always seem to strike up a sewing conversation with another customer or associate in the store and that is so pleasant. The variety and quality of printed cottons available in these stores are wonderful. I found the fabric for this apron in such a store.

The very first thing I rush to do every morning is to brew a pot of coffee. Coffee is an addiction for me. My first apron of 2012 reflects my love for coffee!

This was so much fun to plan and to make! The coffee pot applique was featured in The Perfect Apron and I just had to use it! My cup is actually a pocket. This waist apron has cute bow tie.

No Jocasta, you can not have this one! (LOL)

Slouchy Beret

There is so much to learn when making this beret. The crochet stitches used are: chain stitch, slip stitch, single stitch and double stitch, Techniques used are bobble, cable, decrease and ribbing. Let me warn you that a lot of bobbles are made in this beret! (LOL)

First Sewing Project 2012 - McCall's 6349 Dress

Project Details
I have stated that 2012 would be the Year of the Dress for my sewing projects. Well, here is my first project and it is a dress. Of course the first project and dress is for Jocasta! (LOL) I have promised Jocasta a strapless dress for sometime now. This summer I found the fabric for this dress and thought it would made a great poolside party dress. Oh, it is winter right now! Anyway, she will have it in her closet when needed.

Dress
Pattern - McCall’s 6349, View A
Fabric - 1 7/8 yards Hawaiian Floral Print Fabric (I cannot remember were I brought this fabric!), 2 3/8 yards of Lining
Notions - One 14 Inch Zipper, One Hook and Eye, 1 ¾ yards of ¼ Inch Covered Boning

This dress is close-fitting, therefore; you must take care fitting it to the bust and upper chest. Jocasta was home for Christmas and I make fitting adjustments to the bodice. The bodice is boned and underlined. The whole dress is lined. McCall’s lists this pattern as “Easy!” (LOL) Seriously it is a great pattern to introduce yourself to underlining and boning.

Conclusion
Jocasta stated she loved it during the construction stage. So summer hurry up so she can wear it!

Princess Kate Supports Scouting

Today Clarence House announced that Princess Kate plans to work with Scouts UK. Kate was a scout herself, a Brownie. I was very pleased to hear this announcement. I was a girl scout myself, a Brownie, a Junior and a Cadet. Jocasta was a scout,a Daisy, a Brownie, a Junior and a Cadet! I have sold many a box of Girl Scout cookies! (LOL)

Bias Tape Dream Come True

I love bias tape. I use bias tape to trim aprons, skirts, necklines, ruffles, etc. I have purchased much inexpensive bias tape but have been limited in color choices and tape size. I have seen online and in magazines beautiful pieces of bias tape, some even featured with prints! However I could not afford to purchase the highly priced tape.

Well for Christmas, Jocasta has my bias tape dreams come true. What a great gift! (Honestly, I did beg for it, LOL.)

I am so excited to learn how to use this machine. I am also pleased with the machine's small size and easy storage capability. Look for pretty "designer" bias tape on my projects in the future!

Adrienne's Crocheted Scarf and Hat Set

Project Details

Adrienne request that I crochet scarf to kept her neck warm. I felt she also needed a hat. Please find below my first craft project for 2012.

Hat
Pattern: Beginner‘s Beanie, Lion Brand Yarns, Free Pattern
Yarn: Lion Brand Homespun: 1 Ball, Montana Sky 790-368
Hook: Size N-13 (9 mm)
Pattern Sizing: One Size: Finished circumference about 20 inches will stretch to fit a range of sizes.

The hat is crocheted in the round from the top down to the brim using the single crochet stitch. This is a good beginner pattern for practicing crochet in the round and basic increases. The hat also features a cute pom-pom. To make the pom-pom, I cut a piece of cardboard into a 3inch by 3 inch square. I wrapped the square until yarn depth was ½ inch thick. I carefully removed the yarn from cardboard. I tied a 18 inch length of yarn around my yarn. I then cut the end loops, trimmed the pom-pom to desired roundness and attached to top of hat.

Pattern: One-Skein Beginner Scarf, Lion Brand Yarns, Free Pattern
Yarn: Lion Brand Homespun: 1 Ball, Montana Sky 790-368
Hook: Size N-13 (9 mm)
Pattern Sizing: One Size: 6 inches x 71 inches

The scarf is crocheted in rows using the single crochet stitch. This is truly a beginner’s pattern. I actually used this pattern to crochet my first scarf many years ago. To this scarf I added a simple border crocheted using two rounds in the single crochet stitch.

Conclusion
A cute and simple scarf and hat set to keep the lovely Adrienne warm.

Crocheted Throw for Jo

Project Details

This year I crocheted two Purely Square Baby Throws for two sweet newborns. I love the pattern very much! Well, my 24 year old baby needed a new crocheted throw. So I thought why not expand the length and width of the Purely Square Baby Throw and make one for Jocasta.

Pattern: Purely Square Baby Throw, Lion Brand Yarns, Free Pattern
Yarn: Coats, Red Heart Super Saver Regular: 6 balls, 324 Bright Yellow
Hook: Size I-9 (5.50 mm)
Pattern Sizing: I actually don’t know because I kept crocheting until I used all the yarn! (LOL)

This pattern is a very simple double crochet shell stitch that is completed in rounds. I added a 2 inch single stitch border to this throw since it was really for an adult!

Conclusion
Jocasta and Kingston both love the throw!

By the way, I was crocheting these items for Christmas when I was not packing or unpacking moving vans! (LOL)

Urban Granny Dog Sweater

Kingston's Urban Granny Dog Sweater

This pattern is very easy to accomplish. However, it is very important to know your puppy’s following measurements :1. Back Length (from neck to base of tail) 2. Chest and 3. Neck. With the correct measurements you can make sizing adjustments to the pattern if needed. The pattern features a very traditional granny square pattern of double crochet stitches to construct the sweater.

Craft Year 2012 Is Looking Bright!

Oh my goodness, what a day today was! At the end of every year I methodically go through my craft studio and weed out items to prepare for the upcoming year. With the move to Kentucky, I no longer have a room totally devoted to my crafts for a craft studio. I only have a small area of space to put up a sewing table, chair and ironing board! So did I ever have to weed through my fabric stash, pattern collection, notions bins, yarns stash, craft library, apron project stash (getting the picture here LOL). I thought I would be in tears but to my surprise I experienced a calmness and a sense of total relief.

It really helped me to come face-to-face with several issues:

1. What items would I really enjoy making. Unique items that I can not readily find in a store or afford to purchase within my budget. Items that challenge my sewing or needlework skills and help me to master a new technique.

2. How can I properly organize items and projects in my really limited space.
I decided to use 2 gallon freezer bags to hold the fabric, pattern and notions for individual sewing projects. The project bags were placed in clear under-the-bed plastic bins for hidden out-the way storage! I have a three tier bookshelf which now holds my craft library (which has been heavily weeded), an iron, thread rack, and two sewing baskets. My yarn and needlework items are stored in a very large canvas bag I purchased from Lion Brand Yarn Company! I store my sewing machine and pattern collection boxes on the floor of a bedroom closet. I store ironing board (when not in use) in a bedroom closet and the portable sewing table in the laundry nook.

3. What items must be really be given away or trashed. Yeah, the never used Serger finally went to Goodwill along with a Dressform that had no where to be stored. To trash went patterns, notions and scrape pieces of fabric I knew I would never use.

4. My craft goal for 2012. Learn to knit.

I am going to travel back in time a bit with this post. I was asked by Jocasta's friend Jessica to make a Halloween costume. Jessica wanted to be the comic book character Poison Ivy. Of course, I was delighted to create her dream costume! I use McCall's Pattern 6349, dark green poly-satin fabric, dark green lining, imitation ivy garland, dark green zipper and boning from Hobby Lobby to make the costume.

In New Home

We offically moved into our new home on Sunday, November 27th.

It rained during the entire unloading of our U-Haul Truck. It rained all day on Monday, November 28th.

It is now Tuesday, November 29th and it is still raining!

Willie and I decided to lease the property due to the current status of the housing market.

I went cruising in Vine Grove (my new hometown) for a grocery store. My new grocery store is a Kroger. In the same shopping plaza with Kroger is........HANCOCK FABRICS!!!!!!! So..... I had to go into Hancock Fabric and buy the lastest Vogue patterns which were on sale for $3.99. (LOL)

My New Home

We are renting a townhouse in Vine Grove, Kentucky!

This is a outside picture of my new home. The townhouse was built 2011, so everything is brand new. We will officially move into the new house after Thanksgiving.

I will complete my Administrative Medical Assistant Program Monday night. I have been studying for the final exam. I will post my final grade! (LOL)

I brought myself a NOOK! After selling and deposing of so many books due to the upcoming move, I really understand the advantage of having your library in a compact, digital, tech-based form. The idea of being able to carry over 1000 books in one unit amazes me! I did however keep some of my autographed hard-back books. The last hardback book I have purchased is the Steve Jobs biography.

Just need to say this out loud: I am not sure how I got so many plastic hangers in my house! (LOL)

I made 100% on my third quiz for the Administrative Medcial Assistant Program!

My last class session in Wednesday evening.

I take my final exam of the program next Monday evening.

We have leased a townhouse in Vine Grove, Kentucky!

The townhouse is newly built so we will be the first residents.

Willie, Jocasta, Kingston (LOL) and I will spend our last Thanksgivings Day in Knoxville, TN.

Willie and I will relocate to Vine Grove, KY on November 27th!

I will be spending the next few days packing for the move and trying to sew!

Love for Suede - Butterick 5445 and Simplicity 2552

Last weekend I went to Fort Knox, Kentucky. My new home! It is a very nice area surrounded by several small towns and beautiful rural landscape. I located two Hancock Fabric shops!!!!! So I will survive! (LOL)

I enjoy wearing vest in the cooler weather. This vest was very easy to construct. The vest is lined-to-the-edge with front and back princess seams and buttonhole closures.

This is one of my favorite basic skirt patterns because it features a twill tape facing at the waistline. Oh so easy to do! The skirt has simple front and back darts, an invisible back zipper and a back kick pleat. The pattern does not call for a lining, however I lined my skirt.

Simplicity’s Cynthia Rowley patterns are beautiful. Often designer patterns are difficult for the average home-sewer to construct, however; I have found Cynthia Rowley’s designs to be quite accommodating to the skills of the average sewer.

I passed my second Administrative Medical Assistant Quiz with a 83% score!

I missed two questions.

I have also completed my Medical Assistant Shadowing Assignment. I spent Tuesday evening from 5:15pm to 8:00 pm at the Interfaith Medical Clinic shadowing a certitifed medical assistant. The Interfaith Medical Clinic is a non-profit health care ministry in Knoxville, Tennessee providing affordable medical care, dental care, mental health counseling and prescription medications for the working uninsured. I really valued the experience, the opportunity to learn by shadowing was wonderful. The staff at the Interfaith Clinic were very kind and very hands-on with introducing me to clinic procedures.

Tonight in the classroom, I am reviewing medical coding. Medical coding is truly separate subject course in itself. The scary part is that I really, really like it. All the detailed guidelines, searching indexes, reviewing medical docmentation just my thing. (Yes Jocasta, I am losing my mind!!!!!!! LOL)

Vows

I know that I have to move positively forward when a major change occurs in my life. I was making adjustments to my Craft Studio - sewing room (LOL) - and realized I have many, many projects I really, really need to get done! I have to make some very strong vows to myself to accomplish this goal:

1. Do not look at the Joann's Fabric's sales brochure went it comes to the house! I do not need to buy another yard of fabric or Vogue Pattern at this time!

2. No matter what beautiful outfit Princess Kate reveals, I should not (CANNOT) dash out to buy a pattern or fabric to copy it!

3. Do not even consider buying some of that soft, lovely yarn from the Hobby Lobby Shop. I already have four pairs of socks, a blanket and a skirt to crochet ! (REALLY!)

4. Yes, I love to make aprons! I have a laundry basket filled with cut-out, notions purchased, ready to sew aprons projects. (I WILL SEW THESE APRONS AND SALE THESE APRONS!)

5. The true motivation behind these vows! I really, really do not want to have to pack UNFINISHED craft and sewing projects in boxes once the house sales! (LOL)

It Is A Wonderful Life!

Monday, October 3, my husband was offered a new employment position!

He will be employed with L-3 MPRI in support of a contract with the U.S. Government to assist the U.S. Army Cadet Command by providing functional support and training services to the U.S. Army Reserves Officer's Training Corps. His new position begins October 13, 2011. 2011 has certianly been the year of change for Willie and I! (LOL)

WE WILL BE MOVING!!!

We will relocate to the Fort Knox, Kentucky area which is south of Louisville and north of Elizabethtown. Of course, the official move is pending the sell of our current home and the completion of my Administrative Medical Assistant courses in late November. So I will remain headquartered in Knoxville until classes finish and house sells. I meet with realtor tommorow!

OH MY GOODNESS. I WILL HAVE TO PACK-UP MY SEWING STUDIO!

Oh my goodness. My sister, Charlene, has another little granddaughter who wears a child’s size 6 that needs an apron! What is so odd about this situation is that I had already been working on a child’s size 6 apron with leftover fabric from the prior Hello Kitty apron project. Here is the apron for her little sweetherat!

View A of Simplicity 3949 is actually a bib apron but I only had enough fabric to make waist apron. Therefore I adjusted the pattern by eliminating the bid!

Help With Picking Up My Foot

For the past two months I have been taking my mother to the Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Center for physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm every Tuesday and Thursday. While assisting her in therapy several of the therapists noticed that I had a condition called Foot Drop. I drag the front of my left foot on the ground when I walk. This was interesting because my parents, Willie and others had stated to me that I was either limping or dragging my feet.

Well, I spoke with my doctor regarding the condition. Drop foot is permanent. It was recommended that I needed to wear a brace on my ankle and foot to hold my foot in a normal position. So I am now wearing an Allard Ypsilon brace on my left leg daily and taking physical therapy sessions twice a week to strengthen my ankles and legs. I am having so much "fun" learning to walk and keep my balance in the brace. Stairs are my biggest challenge.

I will begin the Medical Administrative Assistant Program

with the University of Tennessee Professsional and Personal Development Program.

Medical Administrative Assistants support physicians and nurses

in maintaining patient's medical and financial records.

The course is 50 hours.

I will be attending from September 26 to November 14, 2011.

Classes are Monday and Wednesday 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm

(I hope I will not fall asleep in class -LOL!)

My Growing Garden

When I went to the Bristol NASCAR race I visited the home of a fellow NASCAR fan. I learned she was a container gardener and had the most beautiful plants. Her garden included lovely bushs of red Knock-out roses, beautiful red geraniums and hardy tomato plants. However, what really caught my eye was a trailing plant that featured tiny blue flowers. She said that it was a plant that she had for some time but, she could not remember the name of the plant! I knew I had to find it for my little garden.

Well!!!!! I was in Lowes again searching the clearance racks and look what I find:

Now I am not sure if this is the same plant, but it looks very much like it! (LOL) My plant is called "Blue Daze Evolvulus." It is listed as a trailing annual that blooms in spring, summer and fall. I am going to keep it in the house during the winter and see if it will survive. The "Big Plus" to this find was that it was only $1.50!

Now I am searching for an affordable Knock-out rose bush. Mmm, maybe I will go to Lowes today!

It is September and very soon the weather will become cooler. My feet will get cold. I will be looking for warm socks to wear. So the crocheting of socks has begun! (LOL)

Tube Sock
Pattern: Footloose, Learn to Crochet Socks, Kathy Wesley
Yarn: I used 2 skeins of Red Heart Sport White
Hook: F-3.75mm, G-4.25mm and a 4.50 mm hook
Pattern Sizing: One size fits most foot and leg measurements

This sock is made as a tube with no heel shaping! It begins at the toe and ends at the cuff. I love this type of sock because you can try on the sock as you crochet to adjust the fit. The stitches used are single crochet, double crochet, three shell crochet, four shell crochet and slip stitch.

Conclusion
I love the lacy look of this sock! It is also a just project for crochet beginners.

Wheelchair Bag - Simplicity 2822

Project Details

Everyday I am pushing Mom is her wheelchair to some type of doctor’s or therapy or drugstore or salon appointment! (Yeah!) Anyway, I always seem to be struggling with purses, notebooks, paperwork, sunglasses, etc. while pushing the chair. So I decided to make a Wheelchair Bag to hold these items to free my hands for total pushing.

Fabric - Brown Denim, ((JoAnn Fabric)
Notions - Polyester Batting,18 Inch Tan Double Slider Zipper, Flower Iron-On Applique, Grommets

Now folks, this project was very frustrating for me. So let me explain.This pattern requires you to use a two layers of a heavy fabric such as denim with polyester batting between layers as a support filling. My faithful, little Kenmore sewing machine did not like stitching through so much thickness.

Thepatern instructions called for attaching the tie straps through four layers of denim and two layers of batting. My Kenmore complained by refusing to sew!!!! (LOL) I had to buy Grommet Plier Kit and use grommets to apply the tie straps to the bag. Even grommets did not like the level of thickness I was forcing them to go through. (LOL) After several attempts, I was successful with the grommets!

I love that the bag has a huge zippered pocket section and two roomy open pockets to hold items.

Conclusion
I like the bag and I know that it will help to lighten my carrying load, but I do not think I will ever make this bag again! (LOL)

Black Shawl Collar Sweater - Butterick 4347

Several years ago I was in Walmart and came across a "fine" black sweater knit fabric. I was so surprised! I grabbed the bolt and ran to the cutting table! That fabric has become this lovely top.

This is a close-fitting top with long sleeves. Neckline extends into a shawl collar.

This is a absolutely great pattern! I have always feared knits and this time I was working with a sweater knit! However this pattern is a breeze to construct. I used the stretch stitch on my Kenmore sewing machine to construct seams. For the hems, I used a Schmetz Stretch Twin needle.

Conclusion
I cannot wait for the cool Fall weather to arrive so that I can wear this sweater! (LOL)

Biased Pieced Denim Skirt - Vogue 8296

My friend Sandra was the inspiration for this skirt. She often wore the cutest mid-calf denim skirt with raw edges to work with high heel boots. She would always ask me if the skirt was too tight!!!!!! Sandra is ten years my senior and in fantastic shape. I think that if you got it you should show it off whatever age you are! (LOL). I love you Sandra! Anyway, I wanted a skirt like hers so here is my version.

Fabric - Navy Stretch Denim (Hancock Fabric), Navy Bastiste (Hobby Lobby)
Notions - One 7 Inch Navy Zipper, 1 Yard 1 Inch Navy Petersham Ribbon, Hook & Eye

This is a lined, semi-fitted, bias cut skirt. All of the pieces of this skirt are placed on the bias of the fabric for cut-out. The skirt is slightly flared with a side zipper.

Petersham ribbon as a waistline facing for the skirt. I love the use of ribbon as a facing!

There are raw-edged seams on the outside of this skirt which are topstitched. I also applied a decorative topstitch 5/8 inch above the hemline. I like topstitching! (LOL)

Conclusion
I now have to go buy some black high heel boots to wear with this skirt for Fall.

Silk Empire Waist Tunic - Sewstylish Simplicity 3867

This is a lined empire waist tunic with attached sash, pleats at the shoulders and waistline, back darts, and gathers at bustline. Silk dupioni ravels madly, I pinked all seams. I lined the front and back bodice with bastiste. I applied an invisible zipper in the back.

Conclusion
The Sewstylish - Simplicity 3867 pattern is one of my favorite patterns. It is so versatile to use. In the past I have used this same pattern to make a summertime cotton dress by just lengthening the top!

Ruffle Blouse - McCall's 5929

I am looking for classic, feminine styles to add to my wardrobe. The standard T-shirt and jeans is great for working around the house. But I love to wear dresses, skirts, ruffles, pleats, heels, pearls, etc. When I saw the blouse featured in this pattern I knew I had to make it!

Notions - Five ½ Black Buttons, ¾ Yard Fusible Interfacing, 1 Package ¼ Inch Black Double Fold Bias Binding

This is a fitted blouse with darted front and back and a front band.

Below the elbow sleeves are gathered at cap and lower edge and feature a sleeve band.

My blouse features a stand-up collar and a bias binding trimmed front ruffle row.

The blouse features a shaped hemline.

I added the detail of bias binding trim to the hemline because I liked it! (LOL)

Conclusion
This blouse is so feminine. I plan to wear it with my black faux leather skirt, black leather pumps and carry an black envelope purse. I will look so ladylike! (LOL)

I have a notebook that I keep of featured projects from her sewing blog pages that I plan to make also. Her sewing advice and sense of style are so informative and just priceless!

2. Vogue Sewing Magazine and Website. http://voguepatterns.mccall.com/
Seriously, I have spend hours just glued to the website. I like that Vogue attaches the figure type icons to their pattern descriptions and indicates if a pattern is considered Easy, Advanced, etc. The designer patterns are sources of pure joy to me! The magazine is the only sewing magazine I now actually subscribe to!

3. JoAnn Fabric and Craft Store Sales Flyer.
This "darn" thing comes in the mail to my house about every two weeks. It lists which days there will be a sale on sewing patterns, the only way I can afford to buy a Vogue pattern (LOL). It contains a 40% off coupon on regular priced items, however what I want to buy always seems to be at a 10% off sale so I can't use the coupon (LOL). I really hate the flyer, but it does inspire me to shop the store with its long waits at cutting table line and checkout counters!

4. Jocasta Nicole Gee.
When Jo was a little girl, I would spend hours making her cute little dress for every holiday. I would make hair bows that were so big when I placed them in her hair it would turn her neck to one side! (LOL). Then we went through a period that she wore mostly jeans and t-shirts and Mommy just stop sewing. But something happen after she got to college. Jo became a fashionable young lady and wanted Mommy to make pretty things for her again! I just love to sew for Jo. Thank you Baby for giving me this joy back!

5. Princesses, Diana Spencer Kate Middleton - Royal British Style.
I love following the fashion styles of British royality! Princess Diana has been my fashion icon for years and will continue to be my top icon. My Cache Top - Butterick 4132

Project Details

I daydream of buying items from the boutique called Cache. But honestly, I can not afford to shop there! I have been drooling over Cache’s tops that are made with a chain and belt print fabric. I was in JoAnn Fabric and found a nice chain and belt print fabric on the clearance table and on that day things on the table were another 50% off! When Jocasta saw the completed top she said, “Mom, that looks like a Cache top!” I was so proud! (LOL)

This is an unlined, loose-fitting, below the waist, sleeveless pullover top with cowl neck. This top is listed as EASY. I must be the biggest sewing dummy ever because I almost lost my mind making this top. It took me two days to figure out how to handle the front facing of this top. Butterick made the front facing which included armholes and neckline, the cowl neck and front body one huge piece! This for some reason confused me to no end when constructing shoulder and side seams. I kept reading the instructions and my mind just could not understand it. I almost threw the top out but I loved the fabric too much to do that! (LOL) I finally mastered it!

Conclusion
My Cache top the affordable way!

Tiffany's Apron - McCall's 3979

This apron is for the sweetest young lady. I met her last year when I was in Memphis nursing Jocasta after a surgery. She was there to lend me a hand and to keep Jocasta silent until the anesthesia wore off so I could not question her about boyfriends, parties, etc. (LOL) Tiffany this apron is for you!

Jocasta's Crocheted Yoke Dress

Project Details

Several months ago a made a crocheted yoke dress for myself. Jocasta immediately proclaimed that she needed to have one also! (LOL) So I have made one for the spoiled rotten brat! (LOL)

Crocheted Yoke Dress
Pattern: Nell (This was at one time a free pattern at www.berroco.com) Remember the pattern is for a top but I have adjusted it to be a dress.
Yarn: I used 2 skeins of Naturally Caron - Spa - Ocean Spray (JoAnn Fabrics)
Fabric: 1 Yard Pastel Flower Print Polyester Chiffon, 1 Yard Cream Polyester Lining , ½ Yard Nude Swimwear Lining (all from JoAnn Fabrics)
Notions: Nylon Thread, 7/8 Inch Peach Grosgrain Ribbon
Hook: D-3 (3.25 mm)
Pattern Sizing: Bust 32 -34-36-38-40, I made a 32.

I made a couple of upgrades when I made the Crocheted Yoke Dress for Jocasta.
1. I added additional length rows to make sure the bodice covered her bust completely. On my first version the bodice was a ½ inch short.

2. On my first version the straps stretched downward from the weight of the skirt. To strengthen the straps for additional support I added nylon thread to the yarn when crocheting the straps.
3. I used gathers in the waistline of my first version. I really dislike making gathers! So with Jocasta’s dress I used pleats instead. I love making pleats.

4. I also decided to underline the dress and I used mock French seams.

5. Jocasta asked for a shorter dress. She has the pretty legs to show off! (LOL) I am thinking about shortening my version also.
5. To add a little flash to the dress and weight to the hemline for proper draping. I added a peach grosgrain ribbon trim.

Conclusion
Jocasta, here is your Crocheted Yoke Dress. I love this pattern but I don’t think I will make it again. On to newer projects.

Cynthia Rowley Dress - Simplicity 2305

Project Details

The inspiration for this project came from the Spring Summer 2011 Fashionfusion Magazine by JoAnn Fabric and Craft Stores. I just had to make this cute little number for Jocasta.

Fabric - Cotton Knit, Camouflage Print (Hobby Lobby), Olive Crinkle Cotton (JoAnn Fabric)
Notions - 12-14” Invisible Zipper, 1 5/8 Yards of Fusible Interfacing,

I learned a lot while making this dress, so let me explain:

I first cut this dress out in a woven cotton. Constructed the bodice and waistband and fitted it on Jocasta’s dressform. I had trouble pulling dress over shoulders and I did not like the drape of the fabric for the style of dress. So I decide to try the dress in a soft flowing cotton knit instead of a woven cotton. Keep in mind this was not a pattern that listed a knit as a fabric option. I loved the drape of the dress with the knit and had no problem with pulling it over the shoulders of the dressform with the stretch of a knit.

I also noticed in my inspiration page that the skirt of the dress was underlined. This was not indicated in the pattern instructions. So, I grabbed my copy of The Dressmaker’s Handbook of Couture Sewing Techniques by Lynda Maynard and underlined by first skirt! But first I had to figure out what fabric to use to underline a cotton knit. I got on the Internet and found that Sandra Betzina had used a crinkle cotton fabric to underline a cotton knit. So I give it a try and loved the result. It really improves the hang of the skirt and removes the need to wear slip under the dress!

I shorten the sleeve cuffs of the dress because I felt they were too long. I also did not interface the cuffs as instructed by pattern because they felt to stuff with interfacing to me.

Conclusion
Jocasta will look very cute in this dress. Jocasta the dress is yours but the necklace and belt in the picture are mine and better remain in my collection! (LOL) Daddy said I should point this out!

Nail Technician Apron - Simplicity 5154

Project Details

My girlfriend Kim is a licensed Nail Technician. When I saw the fabric for this apron, I just knew it would become the perfect apron for her. The fabric print is blue lipstick tubes and bright red lips. Which I thought was a great print for the beauty salon setting in which she works.

This is a one size fits all, unisex apron. Details I added to the apron were:

1. Bias tape edging at top, sides and bottom hems.

2. Bias tape as edging and decorative trim on pockets.

3. Interfaced the lower pocket for added strength.

4. I wanted the neck strap to be adjustable. I add a small loop with D-rings to the right side of upper front. Neck strap can now be looped through D-rings to adjust length.

Conclusion

Kim seemed very pleased with apron when I surprised her with it last evening!

Cynthia Rowley Skirt - Simplicity 2512

I really like the designs of Cynthia Rowley featured by Simplicity Patterns. This is a very stylish skirt Jocasta selected from Rowley’s designs for me to construct for her growing wardrobe!

Fabric - Pique, Black and White Animal Print (Hobby Lobby)
Notions - One 7- 9 Inch Invisible Zipper, Hook and Eye, One Package of ¼ Wide Twill Tape, One Package of ¼ Wide Double Fold Bias Tape, ¾ Yard Lightweight Fusible Interfacing, 1 1/8 Yard of Contrast Binding

Skirt Front

This is an unlined, semi- fitted, draped skirt with above knee hemline. The skirt features a back invisible zipper, back darts, contrast binding on left and right front sides and hemline and a yoke waistband. To create contrast binding, I used black twill fabric and cut binding on the bias. I love that the binding replaced the need to hand hem the skirt! (LOL) This skirt is worn 1/2 inch below waist.

Skirt Back

I finished the seams of the skirt with purchased ¼ wide double bias tape. I placed purchased twill tape at yoke facing seam to prevent future stretching. For yoke facing closure, the pattern suggested that the yoke facing be stitched in the ditch or groove of the seam, however I closed my facing with hand stitching.

Conclusion
This skirt is easy to construct. I would recommend this pattern to a advanced beginner who wishes to work with bias trim.

Mother And Daughter Runway Fashion Show

Last week I was in Memphis, Tennessee to nurse Jocasta after a dental surgery. On the evening before the surgery Jocasta surprised me by taking me to a fashion show presented by a local boutique.

The boutique's name is Strut the Runway.

This is one of the hottest assistants at the boutique, the fashionable Charde.

(LOL, this is Jocasta's apartment roommate and dear friend.)

Naval Aviation Museum

While vacationing in Gulf Breeze, Flordia,

Willie and I went to tour the Naval Aviation Museum.

Now I love nothing more then when a flight of jets soar through the air!

So I was so happy to find the U.S. Navy Blue Angels jets hanging in the museum.

Now Wille has to be the biggest fan of the movie Top Gun on the planet earth!

So when we found a Top Gun simulater in the museum,

you just know that my Baby had to give it a try!

Now isn't he so very handsome? (LOL) He's my Tom Cruise!!

Major Changes Last Few Weeks

So much has occured in my life within the last few weeks. I wanted to share it with you.

On Sunday, May 22, I woke up from a good nights sleep and just felt the need to go to my parents house. When I got to their house. Daddy was preparing to take Mom to the emergency room. Mom had developed a blister the size of a baseball on her right leg. We spend all day in the emergency room with doctors treating the leg. On Monday, May 23, I went to my parents house to check on my Mom. I found my Mom lying in the middle of the living room, semi-concusious from a fall. I called 911. She was taken to our trauma center hospital by ambulance. I learned that she had been lying on the floor from 9:30 to 1:45 when I found her! ! ! Mom was admitted to the trauma hosptial and remained there from May 23 until May 27. She was released and placed in Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Center for treated of a disease that damages the muscle nerve cells. She remained in Rehab unitl June 9. She has been released to home through a home healthcare program.

During Mom's stay in hospital and Rehab. My husband and I completely gutted my parent's home of items they have hoarded over their 50 years of marriage (really people, I should have called that hoarder's televison show to come film what we founded and cleared away) and did major updates to house. This was to allow Mom access to home in wheelchair which she is totally confined to and to allow space for other need medical equipment. It was a major, back-breaking job! During that time I jumped out of the plane and turned age 50! That was the light stuff to do! (LOL)

My husband and I had paid for a vacation to Pensacola Beach, Florida. I questioned the decision to go but we went from June 9 unitl June 13. It was a much appreaciated and well needed vacation!

Upon my return from vacation, my days have beem spend managing the various home healthcare sessions that my Mom receives daily. It has become my new full-time job! (LOL)

I hope to share some sewing and crochet with you very soon. However, would you belive next week I am going to Memphis to care for Jocasta following a dental surgery procedure! (LOL) Please keep me and my family in your prayers. Hey, I will get to play with my Grandpuppy Kingston while in Memphis!

I Went Skydiving!!!! Really!!!!!

On May 28, 2011, my daughter presented me with a unique 50th birthday present.

We went skydiving!

I am so afraid of heights that I shake just walking down a flight of stairs.

I got on a tiny plane, flew 2 miles up into the heavens and jumped out of the plane!

All harnessed up and awaitng to board plane.

Jocasta's In-A-Moment Dress - Simplicity 2724

The inspiration for this project is Anthropologie’s “In-A-Moment Dress (shown below).

Jocasta asked me if I could make a version of this dress 1 ½ years ago. (LOL)

Here is the dress.

Dress
Pattern - Project Runway, Simplicity 2724
Fabric - White Palencia and Gold Pinwale Corduroy
Notions - One 14” Zipper, Three ¾” Buttons, Interfacing, Hem Tape

This is a dress with the look of a crisp white top paired with a corduroy skirt all in one ensemble frock. I chose to make the bodice in white Palencia with a pointed collar instead of a stand collar.

I love the puff sleeves which are pleated at the sleeve hem then faced.

I was happy to find the gold pinwale corduroy on sale for the skirt and sash. The skirt has lovely front and back pleats.

The 14” zipper is applied using the lapped method under the arm on the left side of the bodice and skirt.

Conclusion
This will be a great Fall season dress for Jocasta, While making this dress the temperature in Knoxville, TN took a surprising changed from 82 F midday to 56F midday! The sewing fairies knew I needed cool weather to work with corduroy! (LOL) The midday temperatures are returning to the 80’s this weekend.

Heatwave Craziness

trim my hedges,

dig up an azaleza bush,

wire support my rose bush

and plant some asiatic lilies

after completing my 4 mile walk today.

Playing Card Aprons - McCall's 3979

Project Details

Willie loves to play poker. At a poker event he attends throughout the week there is a sweet lady who serves as a hostess to the players. She shared with me her love for vintage and designer aprons. Since she is a hostess for card players I wanted to feature playing cards on her aprons! These are two aprons I created especially for her.

Fabric - “Game Night” by Kate Ward Thacker and “Mini Delights” by Robert Kaufman both Calicos (JoAnn’s)
Notions - White Bias Tape and Goldenrod Bias Tape

These are bid aprons with beautiful flared and scalloped hemlines. What I found interesting with this apron is that the seams are sewn at ¼ inches with wrong sides facing. The contrast sections are bounded with bias tape. The bias tape is then applied to the ¼ inch seams and pressed to the side.

The pattern envelope did not indicate what inch size bias tape to purchase. I used double fold ½ inch bias tape, but I believe ¼ inch double fold bias tape could also be used.

Conclusion

Willie indicated that the hostess was very pleased with her new aprons! Ms. Hostess, I thank you so much for your purchase.

Minnie Mouse Apron

Project Details

Everyone has encouraged me to start a business sewing aprons. After much consideration and research, I have decided to take that step! I will share more about my apron sewing business in future posts.

My first aprons are for Auntie Adrienne. Adrienne is the godmother of three lovely toddlers (Raven, Haley and MacKenzie) who love to spend time in the kitchen with Adrienne. They needed cute Minnie Mouse Bid Aprons!

Pattern - Simplicity 3949
Fabric - Minnie Mouse Print Calico, Red and White Dot Calico
Notions - Red and White Dot Mini Bows, Embroidered Letters

These are bid aprons in Child sizes S (3-4) and M (5-6). I decided to make three aprons in the same style and fabric so there would be no problem with deciding who would get which style of apron or color of fabric. The fabric has a light pink background with speckled dark pink dots and a print of Minnie Mouse wearing a red and white dot dress with a matching bow in her hair.

To accent the neckline of the bid apron I have added a mini red and white dot bow.

I also chose to make contrasting red and white dot fabric pockets accented with white embroidered letters.

The embroidered letters are the first initial of each child’s name, therefore; each child will know which apron is hers!

Conclusion

I hope Raven, Haley and Mackenzie will enjoy their aprons! (Adrienne, I will ship aprons Saturday.)

Royal Wedding - Just Beautiful!

The day has finally come: Kate Middleton is wearing a long-sleeved, ivory lace and satin gown, designed by Sarah Burton, creative director of Alexander McQueen.

This is just beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!

Kenny's Lap Throw

This project is a Lap Throw for my brother-in-law Kenny. Chemo makes him cold and I thought a little warm throw around his shoulders may help keep him warm like a big warm, hug from me! (LOL) I had hoped that Kenny would get this throw sooner. However, I was watching a NASCAR Sprint Cup Race and by mistake crocheted over eleven rows of the throw with the wrong size hook! (LOL)

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done? Yes, it looked very much like the picture online.
Were the instructions easy to follow? The instructions are easy to follow. For this throw you will use a front post double crochet stitch, back post double crochet stitch and a cluster stitch.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I paticularly liked that the throw was simple to make.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: The pattern called for a border round, but I did not do it because I think it looks fine without one.
Would you made it again: Maybe!
Would you recommend it to others? Yes, because it is a simple project.

The past few weeks have been very eye-opening for me. There has been so much that I learned about myself. Leaving my job was a major, life-changing decision. But it has allowed me to really take some time and discover the me who will turn age 50 next month!

Four Things I Really Know

1. Crafting is not just a leisure activity for me. Crafting is a way of life for me. I want to turn my creative passion into my liveihood.

2. Worrying is not going to change an unwanted situtation. Worrying is not going to produce a wanted situtation. Actively taking postive steps, beliving in my ownself regardless of what other may advise and being willing to just starting over if I do at first fail is central to me.

3. Walking everyday is not just physical exercise for me but it is also a form of mental exercise for me. I do try to increase my steps or distance every week . But when I walk I get to really consider my dreams, set goals and map out plans for the lifestyle I am choosing to live.

4. My actions are my own! I don't even expect to please everyone anymore. Pleasing everyone but myself was a primary goal for me that has caused me much sorrow and pain. The most important person to now please at age 50 is myself.

Scrubs for Easter - McCall's 5895

Project Details

Medical scrubs are very expensive to buy when you are a graduate student surviving by loans, part-time jobs and donations from parents, grandparents and sweet auntie Adrienne! (LOL) So if Mommie can sew (and Mommie can sew, LOL) she will try to help by making some of those scrubs!

Scrubs
Pattern - McCalls Uniform Essentials 5895
Fabric - Peach Palencia Broadcloth, Brown Palencia Broadcloth from WalMart
Notions - Fusible Interfacing, Two Medium Snaps, Ban-Roll Elastic

The top is a loose fitting, pullover with semi-detachable dickey, contrast front neck band, midriff front and raised waistband, patch pockets, short sleeves tie ends and side slits. The pants are straight-legged pull-ons with an elasticized waist and side seam pockets. Both items have stitched hems.

Although the top as described as loose fitting , both Jocasta and I agree that the top is difficult to pull over head and shoulders when dressing. We think this problem could be solved with a four inch slit opening at back neck that could be fasten with a button and tab closure. If I made this top again I will add that feature.

Conclusion
This was a Easter surprise for Jocasta who happens to be home this lovely Easter weekend. In the past I have always brought her an Easter Basket but I think scrubs were the preferred gift this year! (LOL)

Tomatoes In A Pot

I have been interested in Container Gardening. My girlfriend Sheren does a great job at rising tomatoes and other vegetables in containers. She is also the Hosta Queen of Kingsport, TN. (LOL) Anyway, this year I am attempting to grow tomtoes and herbs in a pot! The plants I have used are 1 Patio Tomato, 1 Italian Parsley, 1 Sage, 1 Sweet Basil, 1 Sweet Marjoram and 4 Margigolds. Oh, I will not eat the margigolds, they are for decoration.
